EYE EXAMINATIONS
Eyesight is perhaps the most precious of
the five senses,so why is caring for our eyes so often at the
bottom of our healthcare list? Regular eye examinations should be
as much a part of your family's routine as a visit to the
dentist.
So what does a sight test involve at our
practice?
History & Symptoms
We will ask you several questions regarding your vision, health,
medication and family history. This is crucial information
that we utilise in our clinical decision making.
Vision & Prescription check
This is where we check what you can (or can't!) see with and
without your existing spectacles and assess how we can improve your
vision with a new prescription.
Examining the health of the eye
This is one of the most important clinical aspects of the
examination. We use several different types of instrument
including, the retinal camera, to examine the health of the
eye.
Visual Field test
A visual field test is a method of measuring an individual's
entire scope of vision. Visual field testing is a critical
screening for many eye diseases and neural problems.
Pressure test (Tonometry)
This is the measurement of the pressure of the eyeball. It
is important in the diagnosis of glaucoma and in monitoring the
effectiveness of medication used to control it.
Slit lamp examination
This is like a large microscope that we use to examine the
outside of your eye your lids and lashes in greater detail.
Discussion of your eye-care needs
This is the final part of your examination. We will go over the
results of the tests that we have performed and advise you of any
changes in your spectacle prescription. If we have concerns with
the health of your eyes we will refer you to either your G.P. or
the hospital for further tests. The Optometrist will then introduce
you to another member of the team who will help you with frame
choice, discuss your lens options and answer any queries you may
have.
